Jacó vs Playa Hermosa vs Esterillos: which fits you?
Three beach towns within 30 minutes of each other, three very different lifestyles. Here's how they compare for living, investing and value.
Jacó — the full-service town
Supermarkets, clinics, schools, restaurants and nightlife, about 90 minutes from San José's airport. Mostly condos in town and homes in the hills. The strongest year-round rental demand of the three.
- Best for: convenience, rentals, first-time buyers
- Trade-off: busier and noisier
Playa Hermosa — surf and community
Ten minutes south of Jacó, famous for its consistent surf break. A tight-knit expat and surf community, homes in gated developments such as Opera Salvaje and more space per dollar than central Jacó.
- Best for: surfers, families, full-time residents
- Trade-off: fewer services within walking distance
Esterillos — space and quiet
Twenty to thirty minutes south, with miles of uncrowded beach. Larger lots, beachfront homes and generally lower prices for comparable size. Many beach properties are maritime-zone concessions.
- Best for: privacy, beachfront, value
- Trade-off: driving for most errands; check legal status carefully
Quick decision guide
- Want to walk to everything and rent out easily → Jacó
- Want surf and community with a bit more room → Playa Hermosa
